Job Description

The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track faculty position with a focus on infectious disease epidemiology. We seek a scholar whose research bridges epidemiologic methods with laboratory-based investigation (e.g., virology, immunology, molecular diagnostics) to understand transmission, pathogenesis, immunity or prevention of infectious diseases. The successful candidate will have or develop a research program that includes a laboratory component focused on one or more pathogens, at either the national or global level.

We are interested in a broad range of substantive areas, including virology, immunology, and global health. We especially encourage applications from scientists whose research focuses on biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) pathogens; the epidemiology and transmission of viral pathogens; vector-borne diseases; emerging viral infections; immunology; pathogenesis; and/or work in a global setting.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research, teaching, and service contribute to the strength and excellence of our academic community and to the field of public health. Ultimately, we seek to recruit and retain a workforce that reflects our commitment to serving the people of Michigan, upholding the University’s standards of excellence, and providing our students with a wide range of perspectives, educational experiences, and ways of understanding the world.

Required qualifications include a doctoral-level degree in epidemiology or a closely related field, and a strong track record of, or potential to develop, independent infectious disease epidemiologic research. Applicants should also have demonstrated, or show potential for, excellence in graduate-level teaching.

Our Department of Epidemiology is home to more than 45 highly interdisciplinary, internationally recognized faculty members whose research encompasses a broad range of epidemiologic disciplines. The department also has 34 joint and adjunct faculty members who hold primary appointments in other departments (e.g., Environmental Health Sciences, Biostatistics, Medicine, Institute for Social Research, among others) or who work in important public health sectors outside academia. Research expenditures in the Department of Epidemiology approached $36 million during the 2024 fiscal year. BSL-2 and BSL-3 facilities are available in the School of Public Health, supporting cutting-edge research on infectious diseases. The Department, School and University have several relevant research centers including the Michigan Center for Infectious Disease Threats (MCIDT), Molecular and Clinical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases (MAC-EPID), Center for Respiratory Virus Research and Response, and the Center for Global Health Equity (CGHE). The Department has large and highly successful training programs at both the master's and doctoral levels, and the School of Public Health has a thriving undergraduate program.

A complete application should include:
  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Please include the full contact information for three potential references. We will not reach out to these individuals without notifying you first.
  2. Statement of Research Plans: Summarize your current and future research directions (3–4 pages), including how your work aligns with and contributes to the field of epidemiology and fits within an epidemiology department.
  3. Statement of Teaching Philosophy and Experience: Outline your teaching approach, relevant experience, and any courses you are interested in teaching (1–2 pages).

Interested applicants are invited to apply online using this link:

Application review will begin on September 30, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled. For questions or further information about the position, please contact the search committee at epidfacsearch@umich.edu.
