All Indian goods and services, with the exception of petroleum items, must be registered for GST. This tax system creates a consistent tax structure across the country by combining state and central indirect taxes. Former taxes such as service tax, excise tax, VAT, entertainment tax, luxury tax, octroi, CST, etc. are replaced by GST.

The GST registration process in India is entirely online, eliminating the need for manual intervention or physical paper submissions. It follows a straightforward procedure.

Previously, all businesses and services were excluded from GST up to Rs 20 lakhs. The most recent revision, however, exempts companies with yearly sales up to Rs 40 lakhs from GST. Additionally, the Composition Scheme allows individuals with turnovers up to Rs 1.5 crores to pay just 1% tax. The turnover exemption cap for services, however, is still set at 20 lakhs. Additionally, service companies can choose to pay only 6% tax under the Composition Scheme if their turnovers do not exceed 50 lakhs.
